20 Essex St Barristers

20 Essex Street is one of the country's longest established sets of commercial and international chambers.

The reputation of chambers in commercial law was established at least sixty years ago, when Sir Henry Willink QC and Sir William McNair QC were members. By 1961 our pre-eminence in the field was such that the Lord Chancellor required us to divide into two sets. Over the years a number of members of chambers have become judges. Among them are the late Lord Roskill, Lord Donaldson, Lord Lloyd, the late Sir John Megaw, Sir Christopher Staughton, the late Sir Alan Mocatta, Lord Justice Rix, Mr Justice Moore-Bick, His Honour Judge Hallgarten QC, His Hounour Judge Havelock Allan QC and Mr Justice Gross.

Chambers first became associated with public international law in the 1950s when Sir Arnold McNair (later Lord McNair) and Sir Hersch Lauterpacht became door tenants. Both practised actively at the Bar and were later judges of International Court of Justice (Lord McNair becoming President).

More recently, we have developed strengths in the law of the European Union and that of the World Trade Organisation.

We are 46 barristers of whom 16 are Queen's Counsel. We provide legal advice and appear as advocates in courts in England and abroad, and in private and public inquiries, tribunals and arbitrations.
